No Time is the Right Time

EdTech companies sometimes opt for a freemium pricing model. They offer a set of features for free and additional features for a cost. The hope is that some portion of the free users see value in the premium features. For this strategy to be fruitful, users need to experience the premium features. There are various ways to limit the premium features, but time shouldn’t be one.

The biggest challenge for EdTech product adoption isn’t the cost — it is gaining the attention of teachers for a pilot. Teachers don’t have a lot of flexibility and have precious free time. When teachers pilot an EdTech product, they are not going to use it every day. Instead, they find a unit of the curriculum (lesson plan or project) where the product can be used. The unit could be anywhere during the school year. It is unlikely that this scenario will fit comfortably within some 14-day trial window.
